GROWING
COMMUNITY
CUESA 2016-2017 impact report Growing healthy communities from the grassroots With support from visionaries like you, CUESA is cultivating a sustainable food system that strengthens family farms and builds healthy communities. Join us in looking back on our exciting year, spring 2016-2017. Together, we expanded our farmers markets and other educational programs, and widened our community.
FARMERS MARKETS
The heart of our education work takes place in the farmers market.
Four times a week, rain or shine, urban dwellers and rural farmers come together on city streets to share good food and swap recipes, knowledge, and stories.
The Ferry Plaza Farmers Market

Our flagship market, the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, has been thriving for 24 years. Your support helps small sustainable farmers and food entrepreneurs succeed,
as they grow fresh produce and create delicious dishes using methods that
care for people and the earth.
Hello, Oakland!
In 2016, we expanded our signature education programs and markets to the East Bay for the first time, as the new operators of Oakland's Jack London Square Farmers Market.
Visit us on Sundays, 10am - 3pm

the diversity of our local community.
Through CUESA, my business has gained access and exposure to a customer base that aligns with my vision and values, along with an invaluable selling opportunity at one of the premier farmers markets in the country.” Reem Assil, Reem's “
Sustainability, today and tomorrow
The average age of a farmer is 58.3 and climbing. At a time when new farmers are needed more than ever, there are still many barriers to entry for young people entering the profession. By supporting the next generation of farmers at CUESA's markets, you're investing in the future of a food system that values family-owned businesses and creates opportunities for new growers.
CUESA is teaching people and kids why local food is better on so many levels. It is vital to us as farmers to have customers who appreciate what we do. There’s no other organization that supports us that way.” Mollie Sitkin, third-generation farmer at Old Dog Ranch “

The Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA) has been getting urbanites to know where their food comes from since 1994. As the movers and shakers behind some of the city's best farmers markets, they've been shepherding the seasonal-produce revolution, convening highbrow panel discussions, showing city kids around farmyards, and, of course, bringing baby goats to town for the last two [goat festivals].” SF Weekly, The Best of San Francisco “

Schoolyard to Market High Schools

The Academy SF @ McAteer

Tell me more!

We need to have this Schoolyard to Market class, and other students need to have this class, too. Everyone should have the opportunity to know what it feels like to be healthy—what it’s like to have fresh fruits and vegetables.” Samantha Gomez, John O'Connell High School Senior, Schoolyard to Market program participant “
Schoolyard to market Foodwise Kids 2016-17 School Year We need programs like Foodwise Kids to help provide children with a positive introduction to fruit and vegetables, and help them understand the difference between whole and processed foods. This program connects them back to nature, and it shows them where food actually comes from.” Pamela Gee, first-grade teacher at Longfellow Elementary School “
FOODWISE KIDS
CUESA's Foodwise Kids brings public elementary school students to the farmers market for a free field trip and cooking class designed to excite young palates with fresh, local produce. As students taste, explore, and cook with fresh market fruits and vegetables, they gain skills that will set them up for a lifetime of healthy eating.
