Rabbits, Pigs, and Herbs in Marin County
August 1, 2014
Last weekend, CUESA took a group up to Nicasio to visit Devil’s Gulch Ranch and Allstar Organics, two diversified farms that have carved out their own unique niches in the Bay Area food scene.
At Devil’s Gulch Ranch, Mark Pasternak and his wife, Myriam, broke ground 15 years ago when they started raising rabbits for Bay Area restaurants at a time when very little locally raised rabbit was available. On the tour, they showed us their rabbits, pigs, and sheep, and Flour + Water chef Thomas McNaughton discussed whole-animal cooking and the benefits of sourcing directly from farmers.
Just a short drive down the road at Allstar Organics, we met Marty Jacobson and Janet Brown and learned about their experimental crops and value-added products, as well as the hard work and dedication it takes to manage a farm. Enjoy a virtual tour by clicking the images below!
