The results for the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations are expected to be released Thursday January 8 in Nairobi.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba will preside over the event which had been delayed for weeks.

Officials at the ministry said all was set for the event.

He had announced in December 2024 that the results will be released in the second week of January 2025.

He explained there was no delay in the process of releasing the results.

“If any, the students are to report to universities and other colleges from June. There is no delay,” he said.

Kenya National Examination Council officials had met president William Ruto to brief him on the results before announcing they would release the same.

The exam began on October 28 with 965,501 candidates sitting the assessment across 10,755 exam centres across the country.

Ogamba said that the Ministry of Education recorded 621 examination malpractices after the exams, adding the cases were reported across 198 examination centres. The government had contracted 32,800 examiners this year, up from 29,876 in 2023, to ensure timely and accurate marking, adding that the marking of the KPSEA exams has already been completed.

The Ministry of Education announced that the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams shall proceed as planned despite Friday November 1 being declared a public holiday.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos, in a notice issued on Thursday, said the late declaration of Friday as a national holiday to mark the swearing-in of Prof. Kithure Kindiki as Deputy President would not interfere with the schedule for Form Four candidates sitting for their KCSE exams.

Ogamba directed all stakeholders involved in conducting the KCSE examinations to report to their duties as usual to ensure a seamless exercise.

“The Ministry of Education wishes to inform the public that the declaration of the holiday will not interrupt the ongoing KCSE Examination papers scheduled for Friday, 1st November 2024,” said Ogamba.

“Consequently, all members of the Multi-Agency Examinations Administration Team are instructed to report to work as scheduled to ensure that all examination activities of the day are well executed in line with Ministry of Education guidelines.”

The CS further said the directive would also apply to all other basic education institutions that are in session.

Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi on Thursday gazetted Friday, November 1, 20024, as a public holiday to pave the way for the swearing-in of Deputy President-designate Prof. Kindiki.

This is after the High Court set aside a previous order barring Kindiki’s swearing-in following the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua.

This ended dramatic weeks that have been full of political tension.

Over 960,000 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KSCE) candidates are set to begin their exams beginning Tuesday October 22.

French, German, Sign Language, Arabic, Music and Home Science will dominate the first week of this year’s KCSE examinations, set to commence across the 10,755 exam centres across the country.

Education stakeholders have raised concerns over the poor state of the road network, which might harbour the transportation of examination materials in good time.

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu said: “For those who are invigilating exams, taking it upon yourselves as if you are invigilating learners who have gone through hell trying to make their future.”

“Let us be kind enough and make sure what we do is within the common and acceptable practices within invigilation and supervision of exams.”

But bearing recent instances where teachers and their learners alike have been ambushed while learning is in progress in insecurity-prone areas, KNUT is calling on the government to heighten security in these areas, to ensure exams run smoothly.

“We ask the government to ensure that areas that don’t have security, teachers and learners are kept safe,” Oyuu said.

“For the sake of doing these exams or carrying out these exams in the best and most acceptable with a lot of security and peace, we wouldn’t like to see commotions during this time.”

The Ministry of Education on October 4 released new guidelines that will guide this year’s assessment, key among them the rotation of centre supervisors who will not be allowed to sit at an examination centre for more than a week; their mobile phones as well as those of the invigilators remaining at a secured location away from exam rooms; as well as candidates having personalised question papers.

The KCSE exam will run concurrently with the KPSEA assessment that begins on October 28, with more than a million candidates expected to sit the assessment.

President William Ruto said last week all is set for the start of the exams.
