The Ministry of Health has issued an update regarding reports of a flu-like illness allegedly linked to the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV).

According to the ministry, HMPV is not a new virus and has long been recognized as a contributor to respiratory illnesses in Kenya.

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus first identified in 2001. It is part of the Paramyxoviridae family, closely related to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Despite being relatively lesser-known, HMPV is a common cause of respiratory infections globally, affecting individuals across all age groups, with severe outcomes observed in infants, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

In a statement shared on X, the ministry clarified that there is no unusual surge in respiratory cases across the country.

“The national public health surveillance system is on high alert, and we are happy to confirm that currently, there is no reported increase in the expected number of patients presenting with respiratory symptoms in our health facilities,” the statement read.

The ministry urged the public to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive measures such as regular handwashing and proper respiratory hygiene.

They also encouraged those experiencing severe respiratory symptoms to seek medical attention immediately at the nearest health facility.

The ministry assured Kenyans that further updates would be provided as more information becomes available. For any inquiries, members of the public are advised to call the hotline number 719 for assistance.

Causes of HMPV

HMPV is caused by a single-stranded RNA virus that primarily targets the respiratory tract. The virus has two main subtypes, A and B, which are further divided into genetic lineages. These variations influence its ability to infect and its prevalence in different regions.

Also Read: Health Ministry Announces Measures To Boost Public Healthcare

The primary cause of infection is the virus’s ability to attach to and invade cells in the respiratory tract. Once inside, it replicates and triggers an immune response, resulting in symptoms ranging from mild to severe respiratory illness.

How HMPV Spreads

HMPV spreads through respiratory droplets expelled when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. It can also be transmitted via direct contact with contaminated surfaces, such as doorknobs or handrails, followed by touching the face, especially the nose, mouth, or eyes.

Close contact with infected individuals, particularly in crowded environments like schools, hospitals, or daycare centers, increases the risk of transmission. The virus is known to circulate more commonly during the late winter and spring seasons, aligning with other respiratory infections.

Effects of HMPV on Health

HMPV infections can range from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory distress, depending on the individual’s age, underlying health conditions, and immune status.

Mild Effects
For most healthy individuals, HMPV causes symptoms resembling those of the common cold, including:

  • Runny or congested nose
  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue

Severe Effects
In high-risk populations, such as infants, older adults, and people with chronic illnesses, the virus can lead to more severe conditions, including:

  • Bronchiolitis: Inflammation of the small airways in the lungs
  • Pneumonia: Infection of the lungs
  • Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
  • Secondary bacterial infections, exacerbating the illness

While HMPV infections are typically self-limiting, severe cases may result in prolonged hospitalization and, in rare cases, long-term respiratory complications. For immunocompromised individuals, recurrent or chronic infections may occur.

Prevention and Control

Preventing the spread of HMPV involves adhering to basic hygiene practices, such as regular handwashing with soap and water, avoiding close contact with infected individuals, and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces. Respiratory hygiene, including covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, also plays a critical role.

Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV. Supportive care, such as hydration, rest, and over-the-counter medications, helps alleviate symptoms for most patients. In severe cases, oxygen therapy or mechanical ventilation may be necessary.

The Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) has threatened to go on strike if their grievances regarding exclusion from offering services through the Social Health Authority (SHA) are not addressed.

In a letter dated January 6, 2025, the union’s Secretary, George Gibore, informed several government officials about their intentions to begin the strike on January 19, 2025, if their concerns remain unresolved.

The letter, addressed to Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Deborah Mulongo, Labor CS Alfred Mutua, Council of Governors Chairman Ahmed Abdullahi, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, and other key officials, highlights the union’s dissatisfaction with SHA’s refusal to recognize facilities and practitioners registered and licensed by the Clinical Officers Council.

Gibore pointed out that many Kenyans continue to suffer from a lack of critical services offered by Clinical Officers across the country. He said the current situation forces many patients to pay out-of-pocket, exposing them to financial hardship, which goes against the objectives of SHA and Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

The union claims that Clinical Officers are being forced to license their facilities with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) in order to have their facilities empaneled or contracted by SHA, which they argue is against the law and creates unnecessary double licensure.

Gibore revealed that the union had sent numerous letters to various government offices over the past two months, including a memo to the President, a petition to the Senate and National Assembly, and communications to the Ministry of Health and SHA, but had not received any response.

The union also pointed out that the Ministry of Health (MoH) and County Governments had previously entered into a Return to Work Agreement after lengthy strikes, including a 99-day strike under County Governments and a 121-day strike under MoH.

They are now demanding the immediate recognition and empanelment of health providers and practitioners licensed by the Clinical Officers Council.

Additionally, they want SHA to reinstate their pre-authorization rights and fully implement the Return to Work Agreement.

“With these issues remaining unresolved past the agreed timelines and due to the lack of goodwill from the government and relevant state agencies, the union has resolved to invoke Article 41 of the Constitution of Kenya, along with other relevant legal provisions, to initiate a strike starting after midnight on January 19, 2025, until all outstanding issues are addressed,” Gibore stated.

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has disbursed Sh7.3 billion in health claims since its rollout on October 1, 2024.

SHA CEO Robert Ingasira said the funds include Sh1.3 billion under the Primary Health Care Fund and Sh6 billion for Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) claims.

“The most recent disbursement of Sh1.12 billion was made on December 23, 2024, bringing the total number of facilities paid to 5,000,” Ingasira announced.

He urged healthcare providers and facilities that are yet to receive payments to contact SHA for support at claimsmanagement@sha.go.ke.

Government to Partner with Counties for SHA Mass Registration Drive

The national government, through the Ministry of Health, last year announced plans to collaborate with county governments to boost mass registration for the Social Health Authority (SHA).

Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Barasa disclosed that a 30-day registration drive will be launched in mid-January 2025 to ensure that more Kenyans, if not all, are registered for the program.

Speaking in Kitale after a consultative meeting with Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, Dr. Barasa emphasized the government’s commitment to making the SHA program accessible to every Kenyan.

“It is the government’s intention to ensure that all Kenyans benefit from this program. That’s why every Kenyan must register. We don’t want to leave anyone behind,” said Dr. Barasa.

She urged all Kenyans to work collectively to ensure the success of the registration drive, highlighting the critical roles of governors, elected leaders, and Community Health Promoters in spearheading the initiative.

Dr. Barasa also reaffirmed the government’s dedication to equipping health facilities nationwide to guarantee quality healthcare services. She commended the County Government of Trans Nzoia for its ongoing improvements at the Kijana Wamalwa Teaching and Referral Hospital (KWTRH).

The Cabinet Secretary pledged to follow up on the presidential commitment of Sh50 million to equip the facility, reinforcing the national government’s support for county healthcare initiatives.

Murang’a County Launches Kang’ata Care

SHA has partnered with the Murang’a County Government to provide comprehensive health coverage to 31,000 vulnerable residents in the area. The cover, dubbed Kang’ata Care, will target the elderly, orphans, and chronically ill, running from January 1 to December 31, 2025.

In a statement on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, SHA highlighted the program as part of Kenya Kwanza’s broader goal of achieving affordable healthcare nationwide.

“Murang’a County takes pride in being the first county in Kenya to implement this mandate, setting a benchmark for other counties,” the statement read. “This initiative highlights the strength of collaboration between national and county institutions in addressing healthcare needs and strengthening Kenya’s social safety nets.”

Beneficiaries under Kang’ata Care will access inpatient and outpatient services, maternity care, and emergency care through contracted healthcare providers in Murang’a. Governor Irungu Kang’ata confirmed that premiums for the program will be paid quarterly in advance by the county government to ensure uninterrupted services.

SHA will oversee the registration process and conduct public sensitization to raise awareness about the program. CEO Ingasira emphasized the importance of mobilization efforts, noting that many Kenyans remain unregistered for similar healthcare initiatives like Taifa Care due to limited knowledge.

“This partnership with Murang’a County is a significant step forward in bridging the healthcare gap and ensuring vulnerable populations receive the care they need,” Ingasira said.

Kenya has confirmed two new Mpox cases in Nakuru and Mombasa, raising the total number of infections in the country to 31, according to the Ministry of Health.

Principal Secretary for Public Health Mary Muthoni announced on Tuesday that over 2.6 million travelers had been screened at border points to curb the spread of the disease, which has now affected 12 counties.

Nakuru leads with the highest number of cases, recording 10 infections, followed by Mombasa with seven. Other counties reporting cases include Kajiado, Bungoma, and Nairobi (two each) and Taita Taveta, Busia, Kiambu, Makueni, Kericho, Uasin Gishu, and Kilifi (one each).

Also Read: Kenya Confirms Five New Mpox Cases, One Death Recorded

“The latest cases were reported in Nakuru, with three new infections, and Mombasa, with two,” Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa said.

To date, 17 patients have fully recovered from Mpox, while two remain in self-isolation. The country has recorded one death from the disease.

In response to the outbreak, the Ministry of Health has announced plans to roll out Mpox vaccinations across Kenya starting in December. The vaccine doses will be secured through partnerships with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and other international organizations, despite a global shortage.

“We have heightened our border surveillance to monitor the situation, especially in vulnerable counties. Our ports of entry are being closely monitored to ensure proper screening of all travelers,” PS Muthoni stated.

While Kenya’s case numbers remain stable, Health officials are concerned about the rising Mpox cases in neighboring countries. PS Muthoni urged the public to stay vigilant, emphasizing the importance of preventing further spread.

Globally, African countries are struggling to access sufficient Mpox vaccines, with only 5.6 million doses allocated to the continent. A CDC representative stressed the urgency of vaccinating vulnerable groups and securing more resources to fight the virus.

Mpox is a zoonotic disease primarily transmitted to humans from fruit bats. Symptoms include high fever, intense headaches, and bleeding from body openings. If not properly managed, the disease poses a significant public health risk.

The Ministry of Health has urged the public to quite tobacco products.

Through an update on December 25, 2024, the ministry said tobacco products contribute to mental health issues like anxiety and depression.

“Consider designated outdoor areas for smokers to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke,” the notice reads.

Effects of Tobacco on Health

Tobacco use is one of the most significant public health challenges worldwide, contributing to millions of preventable illnesses and deaths. Despite awareness campaigns and stringent regulations, many people continue to consume tobacco in various forms, including cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and e-cigarettes. The health effects of tobacco are far-reaching, impacting nearly every organ in the body and reducing overall quality of life.

One of the most immediate impacts of tobacco is on respiratory health. Tobacco smoke contains harmful substances such as tar, carbon monoxide, and nicotine, which damage the lungs and airways. This damage leads to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a progressive condition characterized by chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Smoking is also the leading cause of lung cancer, responsible for nearly 85% of cases globally. Additionally, tobacco use exacerbates asthma symptoms, making it more difficult for individuals to manage the condition effectively.

Effects of Tobacco on Health

Tobacco use also poses serious risks to cardiovascular health. The chemicals in tobacco smoke damage the inner lining of blood vessels, causing them to narrow and harden, a condition known as atherosclerosis. This increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Smoking raises blood pressure and puts extra strain on the heart, further elevating the likelihood of cardiovascular complications.

The carcinogenic properties of tobacco extend beyond the lungs. Smoking and chewing tobacco are major contributors to cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, bladder, pancreas, and kidneys. The chemicals in tobacco disrupt cellular DNA, promoting the uncontrolled growth of cancerous cells in various organs.

Reproductive health is another area significantly affected by tobacco use. For men, smoking reduces sperm quality and count, leading to infertility. In women, tobacco use during pregnancy increases the risk of complications such as miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Nicotine, the addictive substance in tobacco, exerts profound effects on mental health. While it may offer temporary relief from stress, it often exacerbates anxiety and depression in the long term. Tobacco addiction is notoriously difficult to overcome, trapping users in a cycle of dependency. Long-term smoking is also linked to cognitive decline and an increased risk of dementia.

Tobacco use weakens the immune system, making individuals more vulnerable to infections like pneumonia and chronic bronchitis. Smokers also experience slower recovery times from wounds and surgeries due to impaired immune function.

The economic and social effects of tobacco use are equally significant. The treatment of tobacco-related illnesses places a heavy burden on healthcare systems, while lost productivity due to illness and premature death affects economies worldwide. Socially, smoking is increasingly stigmatized due to its association with health risks and environmental damage.

Quitting tobacco, even after prolonged use, can significantly improve health outcomes. The body begins to heal almost immediately, with improvements in lung function, cardiovascular health, and overall well-being over time. Public health campaigns, stricter regulations, and accessible cessation programs play a crucial role in reducing tobacco use and its associated harms.

The Ministry of Health has issued a comprehensive safety advisory for Kenyans ahead of the festive season, emphasizing the importance of health, food hygiene, and road safety during the celebrations.

In a statement on Monday, December 23, 2024, Principal Secretary for Public Health Mary Muthoni Muriuki urged citizens to adopt practices that safeguard their well-being throughout the holidays.

The PS highlighted the need for strict hygiene during meal preparation to prevent foodborne illnesses.

“To maintain food safety and hygiene, observe strict cleanliness when preparing meals. Wash hands frequently with soap and running water, cook all food thoroughly, and serve it hot. Refrigerate leftovers promptly and reheat them properly before consuming. Avoid meat that has not been inspected by certified officers or sourced from dead animals. Keep raw and cooked foods separate to prevent contamination, and use clean, treated, or boiled water for cooking and drinking,” she advised.

Kenyans were also urged to ensure sanitary facilities are available at gatherings to prevent the spread of diseases. The PS advised individuals with pre-existing conditions to carry adequate medication for the holiday period.

“To prevent the spread of diseases, stay hydrated and protect yourself from extreme weather conditions. Practice respiratory hygiene by covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and wear masks in crowded indoor spaces if necessary. Sleep under treated mosquito nets to avoid malaria and practice safe sex or abstain altogether,” she added.

On mental health, PS Muthoni encouraged balancing social activities with rest, maintaining physical activity, and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption or smoking. “Stay connected with family and friends to nurture emotional well-being,” she noted.

Highlighting the risks associated with holiday travel, the Ministry emphasized adherence to traffic regulations.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, ensure your vehicle is roadworthy, and take regular breaks on long journeys to prevent fatigue. Always wear seatbelts, and secure children in appropriate car seats. Observe traffic regulations, maintain safe speeds, and prioritize the safety of other road users,” the PS stated.

Planning routes in advance was also recommended to reduce the likelihood of traffic congestion.

The Ministry of Health has announced a series of measures to improve public healthcare and advance Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by the end of 2024.

In an update shared on Saturday, December 21, 2024, the ministry outlined key actions, including the promotion of healthcare professionals, the settlement of outstanding stipends, and efforts to address pressing concerns in the medical sector.

“The Ministry of Health is taking significant steps to support healthcare professionals in advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and tackling public health issues,” read part of the statement.

Among the highlighted changes is the promotion of over 500 healthcare professionals under the national government. The ministry also confirmed that intern doctors will now receive payments in line with the 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), ensuring they earn over Sh200,000 following a recent agreement.

“Nursing and Clinical Officer Degree interns will revert to previous stipend rates, while Diploma Clinical Officer interns will be compensated according to guidelines set by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC),” the ministry clarified.

Additionally, the government has pledged to clear outstanding stipends for 100,000 Community Health Promoters by the end of the year.

The announcement comes days after Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni assured healthcare workers that the government is committed to resolving longstanding issues in the medical sector. This followed complaints from medics who had threatened to strike over delayed payments and unresolved matters.

PS Muthoni emphasized the critical need for doctors to remain available during the festive season and urged them to embrace dialogue to avoid disruptions in healthcare services.

Muthoni also encouraged Kenyans to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA) to ensure they have access to healthcare in case of emergencies.

“The best gift you can give your family and children is to register them with the Social Health Authority (SHA). This ensures they are protected from any unexpected emergencies,” she said.

US regulators on Friday approved the first drug treatment for sleep apnea, permitting the use of a weight-loss medication for the condition that affects millions of Americans.

“This is a major step forward for patients with obstructive sleep apnea,” US Food and Drugs Administration official Sally Seymour said in a statement announcing approval of Zepbound to treat moderate to severe sleep apnea in obese patients.

Zepbound, from drugmaker Eli Lilly, is already approved for people who are obese or overweight and have a related health condition, such as type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure.

“Zepbound works by activating receptors of hormones secreted from the intestine… to reduce appetite and food intake. By reducing body weight, studies show that Zepbound also improves OSA,” an FDA statement said.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a dangerous condition in which breathing stops intermittently while a person sleeps.

Sufferers wake up repeatedly during the night because of a blocked airway, preventing them from reaching the deep, refreshing stages of slumber.

The condition is linked to higher risk of high blood pressure, stroke and depression.

Sleep apnea affects approximately 30 million adults in the United States, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

The FDA approval allows Zepbound to be used to treat “moderate to severe OSA in adults with obesity.”

Until now, treatments typically involve CPAP machines, which deliver a continuous stream of air through a mask to keep the user’s airways open. Surgery is also an option.

Two clinical trials showed Zepbound reduced the frequency of sleep apnea episodes, an improvement likely linked to patients’ weight loss, the FDA said.

“Nearly half of clinical trial patients saw such improvements that they no longer had symptoms associated with OSA, marking a critical step forward in reducing the burden of this disease and its interconnected health challenges,” said Patrik Jonsson, a senior executive at Eli Lilly, in a statement.

Zepbound, which is administered by injection once a week, should be combined with exercise and a reduced-calorie diet, the FDA said.

The medication is part of a new generation of drugs that combat obesity and related conditions by mimicking the function of a hormone that secretes insulin, slows down the emptying of the stomach, and suppresses appetite.

It includes Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic, which was approved in the United States in 2017 and has since become a popular prescription drug.

The pay adjustment is in line with the 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the government and the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU).

The announcement comes as a relief to the medical fraternity, with the nationwide strike initially planned for December 22, 2024, officially called off.

KMPDU Secretary General, Dr. Davji Atellah, emphasized that the meeting with the Ministry also resolved to pay basic salary arrears owed to medical interns.

The union had earlier issued a strike notice, citing frustration over the government’s failure to implement the 2017 CBA. Speaking on December 3, Dr. Atellah criticized what he described as a disregard for agreements and court orders.

“The national and county governments have ignored our agreements. It’s extraordinary that promises and agreements are not honored, and a CBA respected for over seven years can be undermined by one government directive,” he said.

Dr. Atellah also highlighted the government’s non-compliance with a court ruling delivered on October 26, 2024, which upheld the CBA’s remuneration package for medical interns.

“The intern doctors’ wages were slashed by 70%, an unprecedented move in the history of workers in this country. This impunity towards our interns forced the 10th KMPDU special delegates sitting on November 30, 2024, to ratify the decision for industrial action,” he added.

The pay dispute began after the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) reduced the monthly stipend for medical interns from Sh200,000 to Sh70,000. On October 31, 2024, the High Court upheld the SRC’s decision, dismissing five petitions filed by healthcare interns and professional bodies.

The SRC defended its stance, stating that it acted within its constitutional mandate to set public sector remuneration. The Commission argued that the adjustments were necessary to ensure fiscal responsibility.

With the new agreement in place, the KMPDU expressed optimism that the government would honor its commitments and prioritize the welfare of healthcare workers.
