Moi University Coast Campus part time lecturers are a frustrated lot as the institution continues to neglect their demands.

The lecturers have demanding for their dues that should have been paid out in July, August, September and any outstanding payments by December 2018.

But according to an insider source, the institution continues to deceive the employees as they are yet to receive their money despite their patience.

It is said that the Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof Daniel Tarus at some point apologized for the delayed payments which he blamed on the change of deans, who happens to be a signatory.

Prof Tarus also directed that appointment letters be issued before the end of the semester, something that is yet to be realized.

Following the empty promises, the dons gave a seven day strike notice after which they threatened to go on strike starting August 8 at 12.01 am.

It is during the meeting that the part time dons learned that some of their colleagues had already been paid.

“The payment were in themselves found to be questionable and suspect and members present lamented on the fact that the payment was effected for some lecturers and for others it wasn’t,” a source privy to the details told Kahawa Tungu.

Marshaling all new, present and even past lecturers who have been defrauded of their dues, especially the firebrand ones, to join their cause was also one of the measures taken to compel the management to pay.

It is after the threat to strike that the Moi University management required lecturers to mark examination scripts in the boardroom without acknowledging the logistical nightmare that would would arise as a result.

“This is utterly ridiculous and unacceptable. No lecturer should be arm twisted into marking in the so called boardroom because that amounts to infringement of the lecturers’ rights. Bearing in mind that most lecturers have other engagements including traveling to their rural homes and since some lecturers mark exams in the wee hours of the night,” the source lamented.

The source intimated that the higher learning institution management still without a long-term solution to the dons’ predicament, employed new part-time lectures who have been hoodwinked into teaching, invigilate exams without appointment letters.

The unsuspecting dons are then left at the management’s mercy.

Kahawa Tungu also understands that some part time lecturers seen as hardliners have been profiled and earmarked for victimization.

For instance, the source intimated, one Joel Rono who taught Risk and Insurance – BBM 225 taught and ultimately set the exam but because management perceives him as a loyalist to the struggle…they changed the timetable and replaced his name with one Angore.

Moi University on August 21 halted the hiring of staff to cut costs and reduce its bloated workforce of more than 3,000 workers.

Vice chancellor Isaac Kosgey said that the varsity is restructuring and will have saved at least Sh250 million by the end of the year.

“Our core mandate is to offer quality education and we want to ensure that we do our level best,” he said.

The varsity management has already closed its Kericho and Nakuru campuses.
