President Uhuru Kenyatta was on Thursday honoured by Namibia’s President Hage Geingob with the country’s highest award.

The award, the Grand Master of the Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis, was attributed to President Kenyatta’s contribution to democracy and good governance.

The President, who was invited to Namibia as chief guest during the 29th Independence Anniversary Celebrations at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek, challenged Africans to work harder to unlock the continent’s economic potential.

He said Africa has already charted a roadmap through the African Union (AU) Agenda 2063, affirming that it will help accelerate progress towards the “Africa we want”.

He urged African leaders to support the young generation, saying they’re the reason the African nations exists.

“I call upon African leaders to pay particular attention to the dreams and aspirations of our young people by creating a conducive environment for them to flourish. They are the reason our forefathers fought long and hard for self-determination and they are the reason our free nations exist today,” said President Kenyatta.

President Kenyatta, further, reiterated Kenya’s commitment to peaceful coexistent with Namibia and other African Nations.

“Borders must never be used as an excuse for us to retract back and forget the African spirit of Ubuntu. We remain stronger together,” the head of state said.

He stated that Kenya’s ties with Namibia stretch back to the days of the struggle for independence, when Kenyan forces formed part of the United Nations Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG).

“Our shared values and aspirations and our enduring strong historical bonds of brotherhood have continued to grow from strength to strength, ” he said.
