Nicknamed NNN, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has made history by being elected as Namibia’s first female president.

The 72-year-old won more than 57% of the vote, with her closest rival, Panduleni Itula, getting 26%, according to the electoral commission.

It is just the latest episode in a life packed with striking events – Nandi-Ndaitwah has fought against occupying powers, fled into exile and established herself as one of the most prominent women in Namibian politics.

However, Itula has rejected her victory. He said the election was “deeply flawed”, following logistical problems and a three-day extension to polling in some parts of the country.

His Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) party said it would challenge the result in court.

Nandi-Ndaitwah has been a loyal member of the governing party, Swapo, since she was a teenager and pledges to lead Namibia’s economic transformation.

Nandi-Ndaitwah was born in 1952, in the northern village of Onamutai. She was the ninth of 13 children and her father was an Anglican clergyman.

At the time, Namibia was known as South West Africa and its people were under occupation from South Africa.

Nandi-Ndaitwah joined Swapo, then a liberation movement resisting South Africa’s white-minority rule, when she was only 14.

A passionate activist, Nandi-Ndaitwah became a leader of Swapo’s Youth League.

The role set her up for a successful political career, but at the time Nandi-Ndaitwah was simply interested in freeing South West Africa.

“Politics came in just because of the circumstances. I should have become maybe a scientist,” she said in an interview this year.

While still a high school student, Nandi-Ndaitwah was arrested and detained during a crackdown on Swapo activists.

As a result of this persecution, she decided she could not stay in the country and joined several other Swapo members in exile.

She continued to organise with the movement while in Zambia and Tanzania, before moving to the UK to undertake an International Relations degree.

Then in 1988 – 14 years after Nandi-Ndaitwah fled her country – South Africa finally agreed to Namibian independence.

Nandi-Ndaitwah returned home and subsequently joined the post-independence, Swapo-run government.

In the years since, she has held a variety of posts, including ministerial roles in foreign affairs, tourism, child welfare and information.

Nandi-Ndaitwah became known as an advocate for women’s rights. In one of her key achievements, she pushed the Combating of Domestic Violence Act through the National Assembly in 2002.

According to Namibian media, Nandi-Ndaitwah criticised her male colleagues for trying to ridicule the draft law, sternly reminding them that the Swapo constitution condemns sexism.

She continued to rise despite Namibia’s traditional and male-dominated political culture, and in February this year she became vice-president.

She suceeded Nangolo Mbumba, who stepped up after the death of then-President Hage Geingob.

In her personal life, Nandi-Ndaitwah is married to Epaphras Denga Ndaitwah, the former chief of Namibia’s defence forces. The couple has three sons.

Throughout her career, Nandi-Ndaitwah has displayed a hands-on, pragmatic style of leadership.

She once declared in a speech: “I am an implementer, not a storyteller.”

Namibia’s President Hage Geingob died Sunday while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in the capital, Windhoek.

Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba announced that Mr Geingob had died in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“At his side was his dear wife Madame Monica Geingos and his children,” Mr Mbumba said in a statement.

The 82-old leader had been diagnosed with cancer and revealed his diagnosis to the public last month.

Mr Geingob became president in 2015 and was serving his second and final term in office.
He underwent an aortic operation last year, and in 2014 he revealed that he had survived prostate cancer.

Namibia is due to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in November.

The governing Swapo party, which has been in power since independence in 1990, has chosen Mrs Nandi-Ndaitwah as its presidential candidate.

She is currently also Namibia’s deputy prime minister, and will become the country’s first female president if she wins.

Pedro Gonçalves’ Angola squad achieved a historic feat by advancing to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations, marking only their third appearance at this stage. In a thrilling match against Namibia, both teams found themselves down to 10 players in a highly charged encounter that witnessed two goals and two red cards within the first 45 minutes.

The game kicked off unfavorably for Angola as goalkeeper Neblú received a straight red card for handling the ball outside the penalty area after a chip attempt by Namibia’s forward Bethuel Muzeu. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Angola displayed resilience in their attacking play, quickly equalizing with a well-executed move finished by Gelson Dala.

Namibia, trailing 1-0, faced an uphill battle that became steeper when Lubeni Pombili Haukongo received a second yellow card, resulting in a red card. Pedro Gonçalves’ side capitalized on the free kick awarded for Haukongo’s offense, extending their lead as Dala secured his second goal of the match with a header in the 18-yard box.

The second half saw a more composed gameplay as Angola aimed to protect their lead, leading to a reduction in the game’s intensity. Despite adopting a more defensive approach, Angola remained a threat on the counter-attack, exemplified by their third goal. Breaking through Namibia’s stretched defense, Mabululu curled in a stylish right-footed shot midway through the second half, securing the victory for Angola.

This remarkable achievement for Angola marks their first quarter-final appearance since hosting the tournament in 2010, and Pedro Gonçalves is determined to surpass their previous performance. On the other hand, Namibia’s inaugural AFCON knockout fixture concludes in disappointment, with the early red card to goalkeeper Neblú identified as a missed opportunity for the Brave Warriors.

In a commanding display during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) group stage, South Africa’s national football team, Bafana Bafana, secured a crucial win, keeping their tournament progression hopes alive until the final group stage match.

The match began with Namibia showing promise, but the tables quickly turned when South Africa took the lead through a penalty awarded after a VAR check revealed a handball inside the box. Percy Tau, the standout player for South Africa, confidently converted the penalty, opening the scoring just 14 minutes into the game. Capitalizing on Namibia’s defensive lapses, Bafana Bafana extended their lead as Themba Zwane found the net midway through the first half.

Namibia, visibly rattled after conceding the second goal, struggled to mount a comeback. South Africa exploited the gaps in Namibia’s defense, with Zwane adding another goal by dribbling into the box and unleashing an unstoppable shot past Namibian goalkeeper Lloyd Junior Kazapua.

At halftime, Namibia made two substitutions in search of a turnaround. Despite dominating possession in the early stages of the second half, Namibia lacked creativity in the final third. South Africa, maintaining a composed defensive stance, limited Namibia’s attacking opportunities, securing their lead comfortably.

As the game’s intensity waned in the second half, Bafana Bafana added a fourth goal through Thapelo Maseko, who tapped in a precise pass from Teboho Mokoena from close range.

With this victory, Bafana Bafana now sits in second place in Group E, level on points with Namibia. The fate of both teams will be decided in the final round of group fixtures. South Africa will face a challenging encounter against Tunisia, a team desperate for points, while Namibia will take on group leaders Mali. The group standings remain wide open, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to the group stage matches.

Namibia has strongly condemned Germany for its decision to intervene on Israel’s behalf in a case accusing the country of committing genocide in Gaza. This move comes after Germany acknowledged its role in committing genocide in Namibia in 2021. President Hage Geingob has called on Germany to reconsider its involvement, citing moral inconsistencies and the need for Germany to fully atone for the Namibian genocide.

Historical Context

In 2021, Germany acknowledged committing genocide in Namibia during the early 20th century, where German colonizers massacred over 70,000 Herero and Nama people. This acknowledgment is considered the first genocide of the 20th century.

Namibia’s Condemnation

President Geingob criticized Germany’s decision to intervene in defense of Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and urged the country to reconsider. Geingob pointed out the moral inconsistency of supporting Israel while still addressing the atrocities committed in Namibia.

Germany’s Defense

The German government dismissed the accusations against Israel, labeling them as unfounded and politically motivated. Germany emphasized its commitment to the UN genocide convention, citing its historical responsibility due to the Holocaust. The government argued that Israel’s actions were in self-defense against Hamas attacks.

Israeli-Hamas Conflict

The current conflict between Israel and Hamas was triggered by an attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7. The ensuing violence has led to a significant loss of life, with both sides presenting conflicting casualty figures. Israel contends that it is acting in self-defense, while Hamas accuses Israel of indiscriminate attacks on civilians.

South Africa’s Appeal to ICJ

In response to the scale of the Israeli response, South Africa submitted a case to the ICJ, alleging genocide by Israel against Palestinians in Gaza. The case details a range of alleged offenses by Israel, including the indiscriminate killing of civilians and widespread destruction of infrastructure.

Israel’s Rejection and Counterclaim

Israel vehemently rejects the genocide allegations, deeming them baseless. The legal team argues that if anyone is guilty of genocide, it is Hamas. The ongoing legal dispute raises questions about accountability and responsibility in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Namibia’s third secretary to Tanzania Selina Tjihero has passed on after a short illness.

Namibia’s ambassador to Tanzania Tobia Lebbeus confirmed that Tjihero died on Tuesday.

“She did not feel well, and unfortunately we lost her,” the ambassador told The Namibian, the largest daily newspaper in Namibia.

Tjihero, who passed on at the age of 57, was in the country for a diplomatic mission.

While the ambassador didn’t reveal Tjihero’s cause of death, reports indicate that she succumbed to the novel coronavirus disease (Covid-19) that continues to ravage the country amid silence from the Tanzanian government.

High-ranking officials in the diplomatic circles intimated to The Namibian that authorities in the East African country declared pneumonia as the cause of her death following a declaration by President John Pombe Magufuli in June last year that the country was free of the coronavirus.

Medical doctors in the country are reportedly under pressure from authorities to treat people with novel coronavirus symptoms for pneumonia and lung infections.

Still in Tanzania, a second high ranking government official died on Wednesday.

Chief Secretary of the State John William Kijazi passed on at the Benjamin Mkapa Hospital in Dodoma.

It was not immediately clear what led to the death of the veteran politician and diplomat.

Kijazi died just hours after the death of Zanzibar First Vice President Seif Sharif Hamad.

The president of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council Hussein Mwinyi announced Hamad’s death on Wednesday afternoon, declaring Seven Days of national mourning. He didn’t reveal the VC’s cause of death.

Hamad, 77, died two weeks after confirming reports that he had been hospitalised over Covid-19.

“It is true I am at Mnazi Mmoja Hospital where I am being treated for Covid-19 and my wife has been isolated at home,” Hamad told the East African via a text message on Monday, February 1, 2021.

Hamad, who was appointed Zanzibar’s First Vice President in December last year, became the first person to publicly reveal Covid-19 status since April 2020 when Tanzania stopped releasing coronavirus statistics. Then, there were at least 509 infections and 21 fatalities.

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous Island in the East African country.

Magufuli recently warned Tanzanians against embracing Covid-19 from western countries. He said steam therapy had proved effective in the fight against Covid-19 in the country.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was on Thursday honoured by Namibia’s President Hage Geingob with the country’s highest award.

The award, the Grand Master of the Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis, was attributed to President Kenyatta’s contribution to democracy and good governance.

The President, who was invited to Namibia as chief guest during the 29th Independence Anniversary Celebrations at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek, challenged Africans to work harder to unlock the continent’s economic potential.

He said Africa has already charted a roadmap through the African Union (AU) Agenda 2063, affirming that it will help accelerate progress towards the “Africa we want”.

He urged African leaders to support the young generation, saying they’re the reason the African nations exists.

“I call upon African leaders to pay particular attention to the dreams and aspirations of our young people by creating a conducive environment for them to flourish. They are the reason our forefathers fought long and hard for self-determination and they are the reason our free nations exist today,” said President Kenyatta.

President Kenyatta, further, reiterated Kenya’s commitment to peaceful coexistent with Namibia and other African Nations.

“Borders must never be used as an excuse for us to retract back and forget the African spirit of Ubuntu. We remain stronger together,” the head of state said.

He stated that Kenya’s ties with Namibia stretch back to the days of the struggle for independence, when Kenyan forces formed part of the United Nations Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG).

“Our shared values and aspirations and our enduring strong historical bonds of brotherhood have continued to grow from strength to strength, ” he said.
