Kenyans are actively using facebook, Google groups and other social media as powerfullactivism tool. From political, sports, social to religious activism, you will find it now common. The hot news now is the case of the Kenyan player, MacDonald Mariga who has just missed an assignment with top English Premier League side, Manchester City, because of the ranking of the Kenyan national football team internationallyHarambee stars is ranked 98th while to play in British league, your country’s national team must be ranked in the top 70.
Kenyans also last week used facebook to lobby the police toarrest the run away crime on one of the busiest Nairobi highway, Uhuru Highway. Thugs have been hiding in tunnels along the highway and way laying motorists and killing them before robbing them. This month, a young pilot, Martin Njuma was brutally murdered along the highway while driving his sleek mercedes benz to a hangout in one of the Nairobi suburbs. Now there are groups asking “Must a Rich Child Die for Police to Care” and “Marto – Martin Gitehi Njuma”.
Martin’s friends organised a procession through facebook and have raised money thorugh T-Shirt sales and had many Kenyans join them in the procession
Before the social media, Kenyans used to resort to riots and street demonstrations which are now less common as the police is more brutal and many people so shy away from physical confrontations with the police.
