Kenya has lost one of its celebrated freedom fighters, Agnes Muthoni, famously known as Major Gachefu.

She was a key figure in the fight against British colonial rule, serving under the command of Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi Wachiuri in the Heka Heka Battalion of the Kenya Land and Freedom Army, widely known as the Mau Mau.

Muthoni, the wife of the late General Bahati, spent her life fighting for Kenya’s liberation, remembered for her courage and commitment to the cause.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua led the nation in mourning her death, describing her as a brave and dedicated patriot.

“I have received the news of the death of Agnes Muthoni Kinyua of the family of General Bahati with great sadness,” Gachagua said.

“Major Gachefu will be remembered for her courage and bravery, as well as her ruthlessness in dealing with traitors and those who betrayed the cause.”

Gachagua extended his condolences to Muthoni’s family, friends, and the people of Nyandarua during this difficult time.

“May the Lord give them comfort and strength to bear the loss. Fare thee well, ‘Gitungati.’”

Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, Tanzania’s newly elected regional director for the World Health Organization (WHO) in Africa, has died at the age of 55.

Dr. Ndugulile passed away on Wednesday morning in India, where he was undergoing treatment. Tanzania’s Speaker of Parliament confirmed the news, though the exact nature of his illness has not been disclosed.

Dr. Ndugulile, a trained medical doctor and lawmaker, was set to assume his role as WHO’s Africa Regional Director in February 2024.

He was elected to the position in August, succeeding Botswana’s Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, who served two five-year terms.

Dr. Ndugulile was widely recognized for his contributions to public health and his principled leadership, particularly during Tanzania’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the country’s Deputy Minister for Health in 2020, he took a firm stance on evidence-based health measures, often clashing with the late President John Magufuli’s scepticism about the virus.

During his tenure, Dr. Ndugulile promoted preventive measures, such as mask-wearing and discouraging unproven traditional remedies like herbal steam inhalation, which President Magufuli had publicly endorsed.

His outspoken approach ultimately led to his dismissal in May 2020, but his commitment to public health remained unwavering.

Dr. Ndugulile rejoined government leadership in December 2020 as Minister of Communication and Information Technology, a position he held until Magufuli’s death in 2021.

Before venturing into politics in 2010, Dr. Ndugulile held several key roles in Tanzania’s health sector.

He was instrumental in establishing the National Blood Transfusion Services in 2006, serving as its founding program manager.

He also worked with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in South Africa, gaining valuable international experience.

As a legislator, he represented the Kigamboni constituency in Dar es Salaam and held positions in the health and communication ministries, earning a reputation for his dedication to both governance and healthcare.

Tanzania proposed Dr. Ndugulile for the WHO role earlier this year, citing his extensive experience in global health and governance.

Following his election, he expressed his determination to work towards a healthier Africa, stating, “I promise to work with you, and I believe that together we can build a healthier Africa.”

Tributes have poured in from global leaders and institutions.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed shock and sadness at Dr. Ndugulile’s death, describing it as a significant loss for global health.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan also conveyed her condolences to his family and praised his commitment to public service.

Outgoing WHO Africa Regional Director Dr. Matshidiso Moeti called his death an “immense loss,” acknowledging his potential to bring transformative leadership to the organization.

Former Cabinet Minister and Alego Usonga MP Peter Castro Oloo Aringo has passed away at the age of 83.

His death was confirmed on Friday, November 1, 2024, marking the end of a life dedicated to public service and politics, even after spending 22 years away from active political roles.

The current Alego Usonga MP, Samuel Atandi, announced Aringo’s passing, revealing that he died while receiving treatment at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi.

“I break the sad news of the sudden demise of Hon. Oloo Aringo, former Cabinet Minister and MP Alego Usonga. Hon. Aringo passed on this evening,” Atandi said.

Aringo served as the Alego Usonga MP in two separate periods between 1974 and 2002.

He is remembered for his influential role as the Minister of Education during President Daniel Arap Moi’s era, notably overseeing the implementation of the 8-4-4 education system.

His tenure saw the expansion of Kenya Science Teachers’ College and the establishment of Kenya Technical Trainers’ College (KTTC) to support technical education.

Aringo was also instrumental in the legislative process that turned Moi, Maseno, and Egerton universities into public institutions.

Over his 15 years as a Cabinet Minister, he led various ministries, making lasting contributions, such as establishing the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) during his time in the Environment Ministry.

Born in 1941, Aringo attended St. Mary’s School in Yala before earning a first-class degree in history, economics, and politics from the University of Nairobi.

He later studied international comparative education at the University of Toronto, Canada, under a Commonwealth scholarship.

Aringo’s political career began in 1974 when he won his first parliamentary seat in Siaya District with a significant margin.

During his third term, President Moi appointed him as an assistant minister, later promoting him to a full ministerial role. His contributions spanned several ministries, including Labour and Environment, with his most notable impact in education.

Former ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo joined many leaders in mourning Aringo.

“It’s with great shock and disbelief that I have learned of the demise of Hon. Peter ‘Castro’ Oloo Aringo,” Owalo said, recalling a visit to Aringo’s Nairobi residence earlier in the year. He praised Aringo as an eloquent and intelligent leader, a skilled debater, and a key figure in establishing Kenya’s Parliamentary Service Commission.

Former NBA player Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, the father of Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant, has died. He was 69.

An official cause of Bryant’s death was not announced as of Tuesday morning. La Salle University, where Bryant played and coached, said in a statement that Bryant “was a beloved member of the Explorer family and will be dearly missed.”

Longtime Philadelphia-area basketball coach Fran Dunphy, who currently is the head coach at La Salle, told the Philadelphia Inquirer that Bryant recently suffered a massive stroke.

Joe Bryant seldom appeared in public after Kobe Bryant’s death in a helicopter crash in 2020. The former Los Angeles Lakers superstar told ESPN in 2010 that Joe was “a great basketball mind” and credited his father with teaching him “from an early age how to view the game, how to prepare for the game and how to execute.”

Joe Bryant played and coached professionally both in the United States and internationally after starring at La Salle, where he averaged 20.8 points per game in two seasons with the Explorers. He was a first-round draft selection of the Golden State Warriors in 1975 before being acquired later that year by the Philadelphia 76ers.

The 6-foot-9 Bryant played parts of eight seasons in the NBA with the Sixers, Clippers and Rockets, averaging 8.7 points and 4.0 rebounds in 606 career games. He was a member of the 1976-77 Sixers team that lost to the Trail Blazers in the NBA Finals.

After playing nearly a decade overseas in France and Italy, Bryant started coaching in 1992. He was the head coach for the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks for parts of three seasons and also coached in various roles at both the professional and college levels in the U.S., Japan and Thailand.
