Amid an unprecedented cyberattack on telecommunications companies such as AT&T and Verizon, U.S. officials have recommended that Americans use encrypted messaging apps to ensure their communications stay hidden from foreign hackers.

The hacking campaign, nicknamed Salt Typhoon by Microsoft, is one of the largest intelligence compromises in U.S. history, and it has not yet been fully remediated. Officials on a news call Tuesday refused to set a timetable for declaring the country’s telecommunications systems free of interlopers. Officials had told NBC News that China hacked AT&T, Verizon and Lumen Technologies to spy on customers.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington denied the country was behind the hacking campaign, telling NBC News in an email that “China firmly opposes and combats all kinds of cyberattacks.”

In the call Tuesday, two officials — a senior FBI official who asked not to be named and Jeff Greene, executive assistant director for cybersecurity at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency — both recommended using encrypted messaging apps to Americans who want to minimize the chances of China’s intercepting their communications.

“Our suggestion, what we have told folks internally, is not new here: Encryption is your friend, whether it’s on text messaging or if you have the capacity to use encrypted voice communication. Even if the adversary is able to intercept the data, if it is encrypted, it will make it impossible,” Greene said.

The FBI official said, “People looking to further protect their mobile device communications would benefit from considering using a cellphone that automatically receives timely operating system updates, responsibly managed encryption and phishing resistant” multi-factor authentication for email, social media and collaboration tool accounts.

The scope of the telecom compromise is so significant, Greene said, that it was “impossible” for the agencies “to predict a time frame on when we’ll have full eviction.”

The hackers generally accessed three types of information, the FBI official said.

One type has been call records, or metadata, showing the numbers that phones called and when. The hackers focused on records around the Washington, D.C., area, and the FBI does not plan to alert people whose phone metadata was accessed.

The second type has been live phone calls of some specific targets. The FBI official declined to say how many alerts it had sent out to targets of that campaign; the presidential campaigns of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, as well as the office of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., told NBC News in October that the FBI had informed that they had been targeted.

The third has been systems that telecommunications companies use in compliance with the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA), which allows law enforcement and intelligence agencies with court orders to track people’s communications. CALEA systems can include classified court orders from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which processes some U.S. intelligence court orders. The FBI official declined to say whether any classified material was accessed.

Privacy advocates have long advocated using end-to-end encrypted apps. Signal and WhatsApp automatically implement end-to-end encryption in both calls and messages. Google Messages and iMessage also can encrypt calls and texts end to end.

The FBI and other federal law enforcement agencies have a complicated relationship with encryption technology, historically advocating against full end-to-end encryption that does not allow law enforcement access to digital material even with warrants. But the FBI has also supported forms of encryption that do allow some law enforcement access in certain circumstances.

Even though the hacking campaign was first publicly disclosed in the lead-up to the election, the U.S. believes it was not an attempt to sway results, the FBI official said, but instead a massive but traditional espionage operationinformation unencrypted.

“Whether it’s AT&T, Verizon, or Microsoft and Google, when those companies are inevitably hacked, China and other adversaries can steal those communications,” he said.

TikTok is set to challenge a new law that could see the popular social media platform banned in the US unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, sells the app within nine months.

The law, signed by President Joe Biden in April, stems from growing concerns that the personal data of US users may be accessed and exploited by the Chinese government.

TikTok, which has over 170 million users in the US, strongly denies any connections with Chinese authorities.

The company has described the new law as an “extraordinary intrusion on free speech rights.” Today, TikTok will present its case to a three-judge panel at an appeals court in Washington, D.C., in an attempt to block the ban.

Representatives from TikTok will be joined by eight content creators, including small business owners like a Texas rancher and a Tennessee baker, who rely on the platform to market their products and earn a living.

They argue that a ban would have devastating effects on their businesses.

On the other side, lawyers from the Department of Justice (DoJ) will present their arguments, highlighting national security concerns.

Officials worry that TikTok could be used as a tool by the Chinese government to influence Americans and spread propaganda.

Some legal experts argue that enforcing the law would be a blow to free speech, protected under the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

Xiangnong Wang, an attorney at Columbia University’s Knight First Amendment Institute, warned that this could set a dangerous precedent.

“If the US implements such a law, other repressive governments could use it as justification to limit their citizens’ access to information and media from abroad,” he said.

Wang also criticized the lack of transparency around the national security risks cited by lawmakers.

“There hasn’t been a case where such a broad restriction on First Amendment rights was found constitutional without clear evidence,” he added.

However, James Lewis from the Center for Strategic and International Studies believes the law is strong enough to withstand a legal challenge.

“The main question is whether the court agrees that forcing ByteDance to sell TikTok doesn’t interfere with free speech,” he said, adding that courts often give presidents considerable leeway on matters of national security.

While the court case is expected to last for months, many experts believe the legal battle could eventually reach the US Supreme Court. Mike Proulx, vice president at research firm Forrester, said, “This is a complex issue that won’t be resolved quickly. It’s likely to drag on for a long time.”

Kenyan content creators are now able to earn from Facebook.

Meta announced on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, that two new monetization features are now available for eligible creators in Kenya.

These features, In-Stream Ads on Facebook and Facebook Ads on Reels, will enable creators to earn money by crafting videos.

Moon Baz, Global Partnerships Lead for Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey, emphasized the empowerment this initiative brings to Kenyan creators.

“Every day, we’re inspired by the incredible African creators who use Facebook to tell their stories, connect with others, and bring people together,” he said.

“This expansion will empower eligible creators in the vibrant creative industry in Kenya to earn money while setting the bar high for creativity across the world and making Meta’s family of apps the one-stop-shop for all creators.”

This follows more than a year of efforts by the Kenyan government.

Nick Clegg, Meta’s President of Global Affairs, hinted at the upcoming monetization during a meeting with President William Ruto at State House in March.

Clegg noted that Kenyan content creators meeting the eligibility criteria would start earning from their Facebook and Instagram spaces by June 2024.

“Kenyan content creators who meet the eligibility criteria will now earn from their Facebook and Instagram spaces as we start monetization by June this year,” Nick said.

Ruto lauded the move as he welcomed plans to have monetization available on M-Pesa.

“Now content creators can begin earning from their imagination and creativity. I have kept my word to negotiate and get them fresh opportunities,” he said.
