Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua sensationally claimed there is a secret unit that has masterminded the recent abductions in the country.

The unit being led by a relative of a senior government official has abducted and tortured many, Gachagua claimed on Friday from his Nyeri home at a press conference.

Gachagua claimed the unit is led by a man he only identifies as ‘Abel’, who is related to a senior government official.

“There is a unit that is not under the command of the IG of Police. There’s a building in Nairobi the 21st floor at the city center, where the unit is operating from, led by a certain Mr. Abel. Abel is a cousin to a very senior official in this government,” Gachagua said.

“And if this unit is not dismantled we will be giving the name of the building and the full names of that officer and his cousin. Your guess is as good as mine as to who is the commander of that unit.”

He accused president William Ruto of remaining silent on the abductions.

He questioned the similarity between victims, who have been seen to criticize Ruto.

Gachagua argued Kenyans are angry with Ruto’s administration and “killing our children will not quell the anger of Kenyan people.”

“Abducting young people is not a solution, you must address the cause of discontent. Why are people aggrieved with this administration?”

Gachagua added that since independence, it is only Ruto’s administration that has targeted children.

“The question the President must address is – why has everybody turned against you and the administration in only two years. That is what you need to interrogate instead of persecuting these children,” he said.

The revelations by Gachagua follows unanswered questions about the persons behind the abductions.

On Thursday, Inspector General Douglas Kanja dismissed allegations that the National Police Service (NPS) had been conducting the abductions.

The IG warned the public against falling for malicious reports that are meant to taint the image of the police force.

“We therefore appeal to the public to refrain from spreading false, fabricated, malicious, distasteful, misinformed and unverified information aimed at tarnishing the reputation and image of the National Police Service,” he said.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) would later dismiss links to the abduction of cartoonist Gideon Kibet alias Kibet Bull.

Kibet is among six youths who have been abducted this month after making controversial social media posts targeted towards Ruto and his government.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) said that since June, 29 people have been reported missing from abductions.

The commission added that so far, there are 13 abduction cases have been reported in the last three months bringing to 82 the total cases since June 2024.

Steve Kavingo Mbisi, Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, Rony Kiplang’at and Gideon Kibet alias Kibet Bull have been abducted in December, bringing the total number of abductions since June to 82.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Friday claimed that President William Ruto’s silence on the recent abductions is a clear indication that they are happening under his consent.

Gachagua said Ruto should take full responsibility and address the issue, lest the cases continue to happen unchecked.

“To remain silent or inactive is to suggest that these actions are being carried out with his knowledge and consent,” he said.

Gachagua further argued that it is impossible to ignore the fact that the victims are only linked by the criticism against President Ruto and his administration, noting that the state cannot afford to distance itself from the vice.

The president has not said anything on the issue since the trend re-emerged.

He blamed the police for being complacent in addressing the alarming issue, noting that it is incongruous for the police to deny being aware of the abductions despite the existence of sufficient evidence.

“How can the police still be in denial when there are witnesses, CCTV footage and countless grieving families coming forward,” he said.

“Our security agencies are either complicit or profoundly incompetent and unable to take decisive action on one of the most significant crises the country has faced under this administration.”

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) said that since June, 29 people have been reported missing from abductions.

The commission added that so far, there are 13 abduction cases have been reported in the last three months bringing to 82 the total cases since June 2024.

Police have denied involvement in the incidents amid calls for action on the same.

Gachagua also fingered the government for victimizing him after he called out the National Intelligence Service (NIS) for being incapacitated and posing a threat to national security.

The remarks invited a lawsuit against him, seemingly prompting the move to oust him from office.

Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa was summoned by police for grilling over the chaos that were witnessed at a burial event in Limuru, Kiambu County.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was present at the event and escaped unhurt.

His cars were however damaged.

Several other mourners were injured when suspected goons attacked the event forcing those in attendance to scamper for their safety.

Police said they are investigating Thang’wa and other leaders over the chaos.

Investigators based at Nyeri Regional Criminal Investigations offices summoned Thang’wa to appear there on Friday November 29 without fail.

They are investigating claims of malicious damage to property and injury to persons.

The incident happened on November 28 at Bibirioni Boys High School playground.

Thang’wa is among a section of leaders allied to Gachagua who had on Thursday evening visited the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters on Kiambu Road in a bid to demand for quick probe into chaos that were witnessed earlier in the day during the burial in Limuru.

They said the chaos witnessed at a burial event seemed well planned.

Thang’wa and his Nyandarua counterpart John Methu said the chaos were a direct attempt on the life of the former DP.

They added that ex-Limuru Member of Parliament Peter Mwathi was arrested by police officers in the process.

According to Thang’wa, the violence was orchestrated by hundreds of goons ferried from neighbouring constituencies by agents of the State in order to harm Gachagua.

He said upon their arrival at the DCI, they were turned away without as much as being given a listening ear.

They addressed journalists outside the gates of DCI.

“We came here to demand for swift investigations of what transpired today in Limuru Constituency where an attempt on the life of Gachagua was carried out by hired goons by the government. Because we truly believe it was a well planned incident, and the reason why we are saying that is because there were some 200-300 goons from different areas of this country, not necessarily from Limuru, that attacked Gachagua,” said Thang’wa.

“We also came here because we wanted to find the whereabouts of the former MP for Limuru Peter Mwathi because he was abducted by men in Subarus, and we know DCI does that. So we came here to find out where they took him. We have not been given any information, they actually never listened to us. The Director of Investigations told us he cannot listen to us and walked away.”

Methu condemned the DCI for denying them audience on the whereabouts of ex-MP Mwathi, adding that the action has rendered his family restless.

“The wife of the former Limuru MP is here at night, we have not even been given audience by the DCI so that they can tell us exactly what or where Mwathi is. She goes home to sleep without knowing exactly where the husband is. The kids are here, they have not had peace.”

Mwathi’s wife Dr. Anne Mungai, on her part, narrated the events leading to her husband allegedly being taken away by police officers.

She said Mwathi’s vehicle was sandwiched by two Subaru vehicles, leading to him being taken away, as she pleaded with the government to release her husband.

“Mine is just to ask the government to release my husband because he went for a funeral, he has attended many other funerals in Limuru. He has served the people of Limuru diligently and he was abducted by force,” stated Dr. Mungai.

“The vehicle that he had gotten into so that he gets out of the chaos was sandwiched by two Subarus that had no number plates, so definitely that’s the government. So may the government release my husband.”

There was no immediate comment from police over the chaos.

Gachagua insinuated that the State had intentionally withdrawn his security detail to facilitate such an attack.

“Earlier this week the government withdrew the final aspects of my security that was in place after the impeachment process we are contesting. We did not raise issue with this decision although expectations were that any Kenyan who has served at the level of government that I was privileged to serve at, would be secured by government even after leaving office,” he said.

“However it now looks like the decision to withdraw my security was to leave me exposed to the kind of attack we have witnessed today.”

Gachagua recounted the incident at the funeral of a young man named Erastus Nduati, noting that goons specifically targeted him and descended on mourners with all manner of crude weapons, indiscriminately attacking both women and children.

“Today, I was at a funeral service in Limuru for a young man called Erastus Nduati. While we were preparing to lay the young man to rest goons attacked us & the other mourners who were present, including children. The gangsters were armed with stones, machetes, iron bars & sticks,” he said in the X statement accompanied with pictures of one of his vehicles damaged during the incident.

“They descended randomly on mourners present and attacked them using the weapons they had. A specific group followed me as I went to my car, which they proceeded to attack with stones and iron bars. We literally drove out of the venue under a hail of rocks!”

Gachagua expressed his dismay over the state of affairs, condemning the government’s alleged role in the incident.

“This is very sad state of affairs and a major low for the state, who were clearly complicit in these actions. We just especially remember the family that had a loved one in a casket, who had to run to safety despite their profound grief,” he said.

“We will not be scared away from standing with Kenyans who need us to support them in their moments of need. We just expect such a terrible moment of shame will not be repeated.”

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was Thursday forced to flee after goons disrupted a burial service for the late Erastus Nduati in Limuru, Kiambu County.

He was not injured but his cars were damaged.

He had to be evacuated by his security and local ones. This marks another chaotic scene and what may be on the way in the politics of Mt Kenya.

As a result of the chaos, several people sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment.

The chaos ensued when former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi was addressing the mourners as he was accusing the State of harassing Gachagua to the point of withdrawing his entire security detail.

He questioned why the government was hellbent on removing Gachagua as DP barely two years in office.

“This leader worked very hard during his time. And when you formed the government, it reached a point that they turned on you, I’ll tell you God is still on the throne. You saw even his bodyguards were taken away,” the MP said.

The former lawmaker could be seen struggling to communicate through the microphone which had developed technical issues.

Shortly after, goons stormed the event, causing chaos by bringing down the tents and destroying the setup. At the time, the former DP had not been accorded the chance to speak.

The mourners began to flee the scene, trying to escape the melee while others began throwing plastic chairs towards the goons’ direction.

The goons hurled stones at the vehicle carrying Gachagua’s entourage, shattering the rear window. The former DP, however, managed to escape.

Gachagua was impeached in a fallout with president William Ruto.

Members of Parliament have questioned millions spent on renovations during former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s tenure.

The National Assembly Committee on Administration and Internal Security has expressed concern about the high costs incurred in renovating the Harambee Annex office, Karen residence and Mombasa office.

Legislators noted that the Harambee Annex, constructed at a cost of Sh600 million, now requires Sh560 million in additional renovations.

As of June 2024, the refurbishment of the Harambee Annex stood at only 22% completion, raising questions about the slow pace of work relative to the funds already spent.

They also flagged the Karen residence, where Sh249 million has already been spent out of a total refurbishment cost of Sh560 million.

The upgrades to the Karen residence include the expansion of boardrooms on the third and fourth floors, upgrades to seven kitchenettes, repainting, relighting of the building and the installation of a new CCTV system.

Only 45% of the work is completed as of the same period.

In the Mombasa office, Sh49 million was spent despite only 21% of the work being completed as of June 2024.

MPs have questioned whether the funds used were proportional to the progress achieved and expressed doubts about the feasibility of completing all renovations by June 2027, as was projected by the Deputy President’s office.

MPs also questioned the allocation of Sh771.7 million to the Office of the Spouse of the Deputy President, Dorcas Rigathi, seeking an explanation on how the funds were utilized.

They raised concerns about whether this allocation met the threshold for prudent use of taxpayers money given the limited scope of the office’s functions.

The DP’s office claims Sh5 million was reportedly generated from the disposal of obsolete stores which MPs allege lacks proper documentation and Treasury approval.

They pointed out that this amount was not reflected in funds received from the exchequer, suggesting a possible misrepresentation of financial transactions.

The committee has called for a thorough audit of the funds to ensure accountability.

MPs say that failure to address these issues could erode public trust in government expenditure and set a troubling precedent for unchecked spending in public offices.

Civil society groups have also joined the call for a forensic audit to determine if there was any misuse of resources during the tenure in question.

Impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Sunday hinted at making a l political comeback in January 2025 after holding consultations with like-minded residents of the Mt. Kenya region.

Gachagua said that his bitter fallout with President William Ruto has allowed him to re-strategize his next political move.

He spoke during a church service in Murang’a on Sunday.

He said Ruto’s true colours became apparent when he purportedly supported his ouster and his political comeback will be sane and judicious.

“We as the Mt. Kenya people hate two things; lies and betrayal. This coming January after the talks we will announce the next direction. Never again shall we find ourselves in the hole we are in,” said Gachagua.

“President Ruto, my friend, did a good thing to bring this fight against me and the people of the mountain because now we know him. Now we understand you (Ruto) and we will address you as we know you and who you are. Now we will have talks with respect.”

Gachagua said that he has been holding talks with church leaders, businesspeople, professionals, and like-minded leaders “who love our people.”

“It is better you (Ruto) have launched this attack early because if it was in the second term you would have bothered us.”

Since his impeachment, he has claimed that leaders were bribed to support his removal from office.

“MPs went and passed the Finance Bill 2024. I was the only one in Cabinet who was against it. The president said no, you do not have to do what is popular, you do what is right. I said “that is okay” but a majority of Kenyans are saying it is not right,” said Gachagua.

He has also criticized a section of politicians for what he described as the mistreatment of religious leaders, urging Ruto to listen to the clergy rather than dismiss their concerns.

On November 17, Gachagua warned that the current administration risks repeating the mistakes of former President Daniel Arap Moi, who allegedly oppressed and humiliated religious leaders.

He accused the government of harassment and intimidation, claiming that security agents in unmarked cars have been following him and were spotted around his Nairobi and Nyeri homes.

“They are parking at the entrance of my Nairobi residence, taking note of all my visitors, and they trail me whenever I leave the house, even all the way to my rural home in Nyeri,” Gachagua said in a past statement.

The allegations were however dismissed by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), calling them a misrepresentation of the agency’s actions and intentions.

Meanwhile, Ruto has maintained that he will not stop giving monetary advances to churches amid rising criticism from the clergy and Kenyans.

Speaking during a church service in Kericho on Sunday, Ruto noted that he has been committed to supporting the advancement of churches and the spread of Christianity by donating money.

Ruto said he will not stop his customary deed since he is “a product of giving”, adding that he will not be silenced by naysayers.

“We have absolutely no apologies to make as we give to God because God gave first. We understand the word of God enough to know that it is more blessed to give than to receive and that is what we are going to do,” he said.

“We will build our churches and we will work together to spread the word of God. I have helped build 30 churches in 30 years and I have never lacked because I know the secret in giving and I know what it does.”

Ruto’s sentiments lie on the backdrop of a sour relationship with the church as the Archdiocese of Nairobi returned Sh2.8 million donated by the President and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on November 17.

The Archdiocese rejected the money made at Soweto Catholic Church, saying that the rejection aligns with Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) directives and the Public Fundraising Appeals Bill 2024.

The collapsed relationship stems from ignored calls for vigilance, sobriety and integrity in governance as many churches have censured the state for poor leadership.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Wednesday night his life is in danger.

He said security agents in unmarked cars have been trailing him.

It is not clear what their mission is.

He at the same time expressed fears over his life telling Kenyans to hold the state responsible incase he is harmed.

“In this era of extrajudicial killings, forced abductions and disappearances by state agents, I have thought it important to share with Kenyans the harassment and intimidation I am going through, and inform them to hold the state responsible if I am harmed by state agents.”

“I request the state to leave me alone! You hounded me out of office, and you should now allow me to enjoy my peace as a private citizen,” he said.

He said the cars are parking at the entrance of his Nairobi residence, taking note of all his visitors, and they trail him whenever he leaves the house, even all the way to his rural home in Nyeri.

He took a photo of one of the said cars and shared it on his social media accounts.

“Last Sunday, the below saloon car that was parked at the entrance to my residence trailed me to PCEA Kerarapon Church, followed me to where I went for a late lunch and back to the house! Upon checking the NTSA portal, I noticed that the number plates are registered to a lorry,” he said.

He argued the surveillance and intimidation of Kenyans was last witnessed during the era of the dreaded ‘Special Branch’ during the 24 years of Moi’s misrule.

Gachagua was a District Officer during Moi’s rule.

Police headquarters said no report had been made on the said claims hence they cannot act on the same.

Last week, the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) refuted reports that detectives tried to prevent former Gachagua from attending a church event.

The former DP and his allies attended a church service at Priesthood Fellowship Church in Kahawa West in Nairobi on November 10.

This was followed by claims police had tried to stop him from attending the event.

The DCI said that the detective used an unmarked Subaru vehicle was false.

DCI boss Mohamed Amin said the Directorate operates within the confines of the law and does not interfere with the operations of other institutions.

“We want to clarify that these allegations are entirely false and seem to be aimed at misrepresenting the actions and intentions of the DCI.”

“The DCI operates within the parameters established by the rule of law and has consistently affirmed its commitment to refraining from interference in the liberties of individuals and institutions,” Amin said in a statement.

Since he was impeached, Gachagua has been using the church to preach his gospel.

He has since been allocated four security officers to guard him after he protested his life was in danger following political fallout.

He was impeached over a number of claims. Kithure Kindiki has since taken over the position.

This was followed by claims police had tried to stop him from attending the event. DCI boss Amin Mohamed said claims by the Daily Nation that the detective used an unmarked Subaru vehicle were false.

DCI added that the claim by the reporter that they were unable to obtain a comment from the DCI is also not true.

“The Director of Criminal Investigations provided a prompt response, reaffirming the DCI’s commitment to respecting the autonomy of religious institutions and the writer acknowledged receipt of this response.”

The investigations agency insisted that the daily must thoroughly verify facts, present balanced perspectives, and handle sensitive topics carefully to uphold its commitment to truth and fairness in journalism.

“This is particularly important when the information affects individuals’ reputations and the integrity of institutions.”

Impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has moved to the Court of Appeal seeking orders staying the ruling delivered last week by a three judge bench.

Gachagua in his appeal contends that the High Court’s decision that held that the Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu can assign judges is wrong, mistaken, erroneous and based on a grave misinterpretation of article 165(4) of the constitution and wrong analyse, of the letter and spirit of the Constitution.

“The ruling dated October 211, is based on not only a misinterpretation of article 105(4) of the constitution but also a violation of article 25, 27, 47, 48, 50(3) and 260 as the constitution accords the power to empanel and assign judges to only the chiel justice of Kenya and therefore the DCI has no power to assign and empanel judges,” argues Gachagua.

Gachagua now wants the Court of Appeal to stay the High Court proceedings pending hearing and determination.

“Unless the said orders are issued, any delay shall result in irreparable prejudice of the applicant’s right to fair trial and hearing,” Gachagua says.

Gachagua through his lawyers argues that unless the orders are issued he is apprehensive that the bench shall proceed to hear and determine the interlocutory applications and petitions herein in toral violation of the Constitution.

He argues that Justice Eric Ogola, Anthony Mrima and Lady Justice Frida Mugambi refusal to extend the conservatory orders baring the implementation of the resolution of the senate that upheld the impeachment charges against him violated his rights.

He claims that the bench’s decision was arbitrary, unjust, procedurally improper and in disregard of their oral application “to have the interim orders extended in order to preserve the substratum of his petition”.

“On the said day of October 24, when the said conservatory orders were set to lapse, in a manner akin to unfair judicial action contrary to article 20,21,22,23,47,48 and 50 of the constitution, the impugned bench unlawfully and illegally neglected, overlooked ignored and/or declined to extend the said interim conservatory orders,” said Gachagua.

Ousted Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has had part of his security reinstated.

He also got back two official cars returned to him.

He used them on Sunday.

Gachagua who was impeached two weeks has been without security after they were withdrawn.

He now has two of his official bodyguards.

The officers are drawn from the elite General Service Unit (GSU), usually assigned to senior state officers.

He also has two official vehicles for his use.

Police officers have also been deployed to his private residence in Karen.

He had been using a private security firm to provide security at the residence.

Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa made the revelations on Sunday.

“The state has reinstated part of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s security detail,” the Senator said on Sunday.

“In the same spirit, I urge the government to take the next honourable step and reinstate his employees as well. Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.”

Gachagua who is currently battling for his survival in court attended Sunday a church service at St James ACK Cathedral in Kiambu and was accompanied by the security.

On Sunday, in Kiambu, Gachagua said the Mt Kenya doesn’t forget confirming the fallout between the two.

“We forgive but we don’t forget,” Gachagua said.

“I’ve heard people saying that three years is a lot of time that by 2027, people will have forgotten. Even the atrocities meted on us by the white man, the pain we suffered under President Moi, we still remember. When the time is right, we will address the issue at hand. But at the moment, we will keep quiet.”

Gachagua had on October 20, Gachagua complained that his security and workers had been withdrawn from his Karen and Nyeri residences, questioning the intent behind the extended purge that targeted his office staff members.

“I have been here alone without a single officer looking after me. All officers close to me were disarmed and given a warning that they should not be near me. As we speak the Deputy President has no single security officer around him. He is alone,” said Gachagua.

“Last night all vehicles of offices who work under me were impounded to cripple the office of the DP. I don’t understand this level of viciousness to a man who helped you to become president.”

He said president William Ruto should be held responsible in the event anything happens to him and his family.

“If anything happens to me or my family President Ruto must be held to account,” he noted.

He claimed that his only crime against his boss was “just being truthful because nobody else can tell him”.

“I am the only man in Cabinet who can stand up to President Ruto and tell him hey brother this is not right. This Adani thing is not right for the country, there is too much corruption in the country,” he narrated.

Gachagua still holds that he is the appointed Deputy President following a stay order from the court halting the Senate’s decision to oust him.

He has noted that he will use the corridors of justice to allow him a second appearance before the Senate to defend himself.

He was impeached by the Senate on October 17, 2024, as Senators voted in favour of five out of the 11 grounds presented as grounds for his removal.

Ruto has nominated Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to replace Gachagua.
