Sean Dyche has been sacked as Everton manager after less than two years in charge at Goodison Park.

The 53-year-old’s departure was announced just hours before Everton were due to host League One side Peterborough in the third round of the FA Cup.

Everton announced their under-18s head coach Leighton Baines and club captain Seamus Coleman had been put in charge of the team for that game.

Right-back Coleman and former left-back Baines have made more than 800 Everton appearances between them.

Four members of Dyche’s coaching staff – Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard and Billy Mercer – have also departed.

The Toffees were beaten 1-0 by Bournemouth on Saturday and sit 16th in the Premier League and just one point clear of the relegation zone.

They failed to register a shot on target at Vitality Stadium and have won just three of 19 games in the league this season.

A source close to the Friedkin Group – which completed a £400m takeover of the club last month – told BBC Sport the new owners had been in talks with Dyche over a couple of days this week, with both sides feeling they had reached the end of the road. Difficult negotiations took place over an exit package for Dyche and his staff before a settlement was reached.

The source added that the timing of Dyche’s departure, just hours before a game, was not ideal.
BBC Sport has approached Dyche – who said goodbye to his players at Everton’s training ground earlier on Thursday – for comment.

Club sources say they want Dyche’s replacement to have Premier League experience and former Everton manager David Moyes is among the names to have been linked.

However, sources close to Jose Mourinho have ruled the Fenerbahce manager out of contention.

The former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham boss previously worked under the Friedkin Group at Roma, but he was sacked by them in January 2024.

Moyes, 61, managed Everton from 2002 to 2013 and recently said he was not ready to retire from football management but did not want to be in a job “fighting relegation”.

Speaking on Tuesday, Dyche said that his communication with Everton’s owners had been “positive” with “no indication” they were looking to bring someone else in. He said they had been “been very up front and open” about expectations.

In his programme notes, external for Thursday’s tie with Peterborough, Dyche wrote he hoped his side could use the FA Cup game to “build some positive momentum”.

Dyche, whose contract was due to expire in the summer, succeeded Frank Lampard on 30 January 2023 with Everton in the relegation zone.

The team secured survival with a 1-0 win against Bournemouth on the final day of that season.

He then steered the Toffees to a 15th-place finish in the 2023-24 campaign despite the Merseysiders being deducted eight points for two separate breaches of Premier League financial rules.

The club have looked strong defensively this season, keeping seven clean sheets.

But they have struggled for goals, netting only 15, and are the second-lowest scorers in the league, with only bottom club Southampton having managed fewer.

This is Everton’s last season at their 132-year-old stadium before moving to a new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock.

How bad have Everton been this season?
Everton’s numbers in 2024-25 make for grim reading: Only in three seasons in Everton’s history have they scored fewer goals after playing this number of league games.
They currently have the division’s lowest expected goals (xG) rate at 18.33.
The Merseysiders have had 63 shots on target this season. Southampton are the only side to fare worse, with 58 to date.
Everton had zero shots on target in Saturday’s loss at Bournemouth and the goalless draw at Arsenal last month.
Everton’s goals-per-game rate of 0.79 is the lowest number for the team in 13 seasons. It has dropped from 1.05 last term and 0.89 in 2022-23.

Former Toffees midfielder Leon Osman said on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club: “Doing commentaries on their games is not easy at the moment because not much happens.

“I do think there is a lack of quality in the squad, but anyone will tell you you should still be creating chances and scoring goals. It is tough to watch.

“In the past 10 games, Craig Dawson is Everton’s top scorer having scored two own goals in that game (the 4-0 win over Wolves).”

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the draw for the postponed CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) will take place in Nairobi on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

The event will be held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

The tournament, uniquely reserved for players competing in domestic leagues across Africa, will run from February 1 to February 28, 2025, and be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. This marks the first time East Africa will host the prestigious championship.

“The much-anticipated tournament will feature several African football powerhouses, including reigning champions Senegal, who defeated Algeria in the 2022 final to claim their first CHAN title,” CAF stated.

As in previous editions, the CHAN 2024 is expected to showcase emerging talent, with CAF highlighting players like Lamine Camara, who rose to global prominence after shining in the competition.

CAF has also announced a significant boost in prize money for the tournament. The winner will receive $3.5 million (Ksh 451 million), a 75% increase compared to previous editions.

The total prize pool for the tournament has risen to $10.4 million (Ksh 1.34 billion), representing a 32% increase.

“This competition is part of our strategy to invest in African football and enhance its appeal to fans, broadcasters, sponsors, and partners worldwide,” said Patrice Motsepe, CAF President. “The CHAN is crucial for the development of Africa-based players and will significantly contribute to the global competitiveness of African football.”

President William Ruto on December 20, 2024, announced the ongoing renovations of Ulinzi Sports Complex, Police Sacco Stadium, and Kirigiti Stadium to prepare them as training venues for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Speaking after a meeting with Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe at State House Nairobi, Ruto highlighted Kenya’s readiness to co-host the event alongside Tanzania and Uganda.

“Ulinzi Sports Complex and Police Sacco Stadium in Nairobi, and Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu, which will be used for training ahead of CHAN, are under renovation and will be ready before the championships,” the President said.

He thanked CAF for its confidence in Kenya’s ability to successfully host the games.

Former Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen recently formed the CHAN-AFCON Multi-Agency Team (MAT) to oversee Kenya’s preparations for CHAN 2025 and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the three countries will also co-host.

The MAT, established through a gazette notice on December 6, 2024, will handle the logistical, financial, and operational aspects of the tournaments.

Kenya has prioritized upgrading key stadiums, including Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, Nyayo National Stadium, Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, and the three training grounds under renovation.

The MAT’s mandate involves mobilizing resources and ensuring financial accountability to facilitate smooth operations. It also includes renovating and upgrading stadiums to meet CAF standards, ensuring they are fit for the high-profile matches.

Additionally, the team is tasked with enhancing transport and telecommunications infrastructure to support the logistical needs of the tournament.

Organizing match schedules, team draws, and venue allocations forms a crucial part of their responsibilities. To ensure a global reach, the MAT will facilitate live coverage of the games while managing ticketing and fan zones.

The development of comprehensive security plans and promotional activities for the tournaments is also central to their role.

The MAT will be guided by a Project Oversight Council comprising top government officials, including the Sports Cabinet Secretary and Principal Secretaries from Defense, Treasury, and Transport. Nicholas Musonye will lead the National Steering Committee, while the MAT Secretariat will operate from Talanta Plaza, Upper Hill, Nairobi.

The team will also work with stakeholders, including sponsors, government bodies, and international organizations, to ensure the delivery of high-standard tournaments.

To showcase Kenya’s cultural heritage and attractions, the MAT will collaborate with the Kenya Tourism Board. Campaigns, media engagements, and sponsorship drives will be launched to promote the tournaments.

Inclusivity and capacity-building opportunities for Kenyan youth will also be a key focus.

The MAT will be funded by the National Government and supported through donations. “The team will be financed through funding appropriated by the government and endowments aimed at realizing PAMOJA CHAN 2024 and PAMOJA AFCON 2027,” Murkomen said.

France’s World Cup-winning manager Didier Deschamps says he will step down after next year’s tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The 56-year-old is France’s longest-serving coach, having been in charge since 2012.

He led Les Bleus to victory at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, as well as reaching the final of the 2022 tournament in Qatar and Euro 2016 on home soil.

“In 2026 it will be over. In my head it’s very clear,” Deschamps told French broadcaster TF1.

“I’ve done my time, with the same desire and passion to maintain France at the highest level.

“One has to be able to say stop, there’s a life after this. The most important is for France to stay at the top as they have been for many years.”

France have yet to begin their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, with their group dependant on the result of their Nations League quarter-final against Croatia in March.

Former midfielder Deschamps is only the third man after Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer to win the World Cup as both player and manager, having captained his country to glory in 1998.

He succeeded Laurent Blanc after France’s quarter-final exit at Euro 2012 and secured qualification for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where Les Bleus were beaten by eventual champions Germany in the last eight.

In 2016 he led the team to the final of their home European Championship, but they were beaten by Portugal after extra time.

His crowning moment arrived two years later, as France lifted the World Cup for a second time following a 4-2 win over Croatia in Moscow.

A Nations League title followed in 2021 before they again reached the World Cup final in Qatar, only to be denied by Argentina on penalties following a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Before taking charge of France Deschamps had spells in charge of Monaco, Juventus and Marseille, winning at least one trophy with each.

Prior to that he had enjoyed a stellar playing career at domestic and international level.

He won 14 major honours, including Champions League titles with Marseille and Juventus, and the FA Cup with Chelsea.

The defensive midfielder also earned 103 caps for France, captaining the national team to victory at the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said star wide receiver Tyreek Hill has not directly requested a trade.
Both Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel met with Hill on Monday, one day after the wideout hinted that he was ready to leave Miami.
“There’s a lot of things that I need to reassess about my career,” Hill told reporters Sunday. “I just gotta do what’s best for me and my family, whether that’s here or wherever the case may be.
.”.. I’m out, bro. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day, I gotta do what’s best for my career. I’m too much of a competitor to be just out there.”
Grier said Hill did not retract those comments. “But he never asked for a trade with me,” Grier told reporters at Tuesday’s end-of-season press conference.
“They were (productive) conversations,” Grier said. “I will keep those between us. The one thing I would say is, in a frustrating season, he was very emotional in a game where we had a chance, coming back from 2-6. All of that with him playing through his (wrist) injury just kind of bubbled to a point.”
Hill caught two passes for 20 yards in Sunday’s season-ending loss to the New York Jets before taking himself out of the game in the fourth quarter.
McDaniel said he met with Hill to “clear the air” and told him that kind of behavior was unacceptable.
“I was very direct with him. He was very honest, and it was great terms that we were discussing,” McDaniel said.
“We discussed multiple things, including without wavering, that it’s not acceptable to leave a game and won’t be tolerated in the future, and he embraced accountability. I wouldn’t say there’s necessarily anything to fix, but we had to clear the air in a rough and tumultuous situation.”
Hill, who will turn 31 in March, caught 81 passes for 959 yards in 17 games this season — marking his lowest production in a full season since his rookie year with Kansas City in 2016. The drop came following a pair of 1,700-yard seasons to begin his tenure in Miami and with Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa limited to 11 games due to concussion and hip injuries.
Before the 2024 season, Hill signed a three-year, $90 million extension through the 2026 season that included a $7 million signing bonus and $59 million in guaranteed money. The eight-time Pro Bowl selection is due to count $28.7 million against the 2025 cap and $51.9 million in the final year of the deal in 2026.

The Las Vegas Raiders fired head coach Antonio Pierce after his first full season on the job, the team said on Tuesday, the latest dismissal following the final week of the National Football League regular season.
The former Pro Bowl linebacker took over as interim head coach in 2023 but struggled through an ugly 2024 campaign where the Raiders finished 4-13, last in the AFC West.
“Antonio grew up a Raiders fan and his Silver and Black roots run deep,” the team said in a statement.
“We are grateful for his ability to reignite what it means to be a Raider throughout the entire organization.”
Pierce is the latest coach to get the axe after NFL’s infamous annual “Black Monday” saw the Jacksonville Jaguars fire Doug Pederson.
The New England Patriots kicked off the action a day earlier, firing coach Jerod Mayo after his first year at the helm on Sunday.

The Detroit Lions plan for running back David Montgomery to be back for their first playoff game in the NFC divisional round.
Asked Tuesday whether he expected Montgomery (knee) to be ready to play next week, normally fiery head coach Dan Campbell kept it short and said, “I do.”
Montgomery injured the MCL in his left knee in Week 15 during the Lions’ 48-42 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Originally thought to be a season-ending injury, Montgomery received other medical opinions and instead rehabbed his knee with an eye on a postseason return.
Montgomery, 27, rushed for 775 yards and 12 touchdowns with a 4.2 yards per carry average in 14 games this season, complementing lead rusher Jahmyr Gibbs (1,412 yards, 5.6 average, 16 TDs).
The Lions defeated the Minnesota Vikings 31-9 in Week 18 to clinch not only the NFC North title but also the top seed in the conference, the first time the franchise has accomplished that.
That comes with a bye week that will give Montgomery even more time to recover. Detroit will host a game in the divisional round on Jan. 18 or 19.

Boise State star running back Ashton Jeanty, the Heisman Trophy runner-up, announced Tuesday afternoon that he is declaring for the NFL draft.

Jeanty had one of top running back seasons of all time in 2024 by rushing for 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns. The yardage is second most in a season behind legendary Barry Sanders, who rushed for 2,628 yards for Oklahoma State in 1988.

“The opportunity to play in the NFL is a dream of mine,” Jeanty said in his announcement on social media. “I’m proud to represent Boise State and all of those who have helped me along the way at the next level.”

Jeanty led Boise State to a 12-2 record and an appearance in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals before the Broncos lost 31-14 to Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl.

Jeanty rushed for more than 100 yards in each game this season and was known for his dazzling long runs and penchant for breaking tackles. He holds the school record of 4,769 rushing yards and completes his Boise State career with 50 rushing touchdowns.

Jeanty was named Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight season. In 2023, he won the award after rushing for 1,347 yards and 14 touchdowns.

The junior is considered the top running back prospect in the draft and could possibly be selected among the top 10 picks.
Colorado receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter edged Jeanty for the Heisman Trophy.

The Chicago Bears were denied an interview with Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy for their head coaching vacancy but will sit down with longtime NFL coach Pete Carroll on Thursday, according to pair of ESPN reports on Tuesday.
Carroll, 73, won a Super Bowl during his 14-year tenure with Seattle and has the most wins of any Seahawks coach (137). He also set the record for most playoff appearances (10) and wins (10) in franchise history. Carroll served as an adviser this season after stepping down following the 2023 campaign.
Carroll also guided the New York Jets (1994) and New England Patriots (1997-99) and has a 170-120-1 record as an NFL head coach.
He excelled in the college ranks, winning two national championships at Southern California during his nine-year tenure and finishing with a 97-19 record. Carroll is one of only three coaches to win both a Super Bowl and a college national championship.
As for McCarthy, his deal expires Wednesday with the Cowboys having exclusive negotiating rights through Jan. 14.
McCarthy, 61, completed his fifth season at the helm with Dallas missing the playoffs at 7-10. He is 49-35 in the regular season and 1-3 in the postseason.
McCarthy — who will meet with owner Jerry Jones this week — has said he wants to remain with Dallas after missing the playoffs for the first time since his first season in 2020.
The Bears have made formal requests to interview a number of current NFL assistants.

Lionel Messi was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, by President Joe Biden on Saturday but did not attend the ceremony at the White House.

The Argentine World Cup winner and eight times Ballon d’Or winner, now plays in the United States for Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami.

Messi is the first Argentine to receive the honor and the first male soccer player.

But while other recipients of the award, including U2 singer and activist Bono, former basketball star Earvin “Magic” Johnson and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, attended the ceremony at the White House, Messi was absent.

Messi’s representatives said in a statement distributed by Inter Miami that Messi had a prior commitment.

“The White House informed FIFA, who informed the club at the end of December that Leo was going to be awarded with this recognition,” the statement read.

“Leo, through the club, sent a letter to the White House saying that he is deeply honored and that it is a profound privilege to receive this recognition but that due to scheduling conflicts and prior commitments he was going to be unable to attend.

“He appreciated the gesture and noted that he hopes to have the opportunity to meet in the near future,” the statement added.

The award is given to individuals who have made “exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values or security of the United States, world peace or other significant societal, public or private endeavors,” according to the White House.

The White House statement said that Messi had been given the award as “the most decorated player in the history of professional soccer. He supports healthcare and education programs for children around the world through the Leo Messi Foundation and serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.”

Biden handed USA women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe the medal in 2022, the first time a soccer player has been given the honor.

Kenya Police FC defender Abud Omar has been appointed captain of Harambee Stars as they gear up for the 2025 Mapinduzi Cup, set to begin this weekend in Pemba, Zanzibar.

Omar, 31, brings extensive experience to the role, having been a key member of the national team for several years.

Speaking after his appointment, Omar expressed pride in leading the team and outlined their ambitions for the tournament.

“It’s an honour to be named captain,” said Omar.

“Having been part of the national team setup for a long time, I understand the responsibility this role carries. Winning the Mapinduzi Cup is our minimum target. I’ll push the players to give their best, but I also know that as captain, I must lead by example.”

Omar emphasized the team’s strong preparations, highlighting the balance of seasoned players and emerging talent in the squad.

“We’ve prepared well, and the team is in excellent shape. There’s a great mix of senior players and promising young talents who have worked hard to earn their place. We are not underdogs—our aim is to win the Mapinduzi Cup. Anything less would be a disappointment,” he said.

Acknowledging the challenges Harambee Stars have faced, particularly the lack of home support during away games, Omar called on fans to rally behind the team.

“It hasn’t been easy playing most of our matches away from home. We’ve missed the energy of our fans. I urge them to keep supporting us as we build a stronger team for future tournaments like CHAN. Playing in front of home fans again will be special, and we’re looking forward to it,” Omar added.

Omar, who returned to Kenya after five years playing in Europe with clubs in Greece, Belgium, and Romania, is optimistic about his future. Now with Kenya Police FC, he remains determined to secure another move to a top club abroad.

“I feel stronger and better now. If I continue working hard, I believe I’ll get another chance to play for a big club overseas. That dream is still alive,” he said.
