OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman’s sister, Ann Altman, has filed a lawsuit alleging that he regularly sexually abused her between 1997 and 2006.

The lawsuit, which was filed on 6 January in a US District Court in the Eastern District of Missouri, alleges that the abuse started when she was three and Mr Altman was 12.

In a joint statement on X, with his mother and two brothers, Mr Altman denied the allegations, saying “all of these claims are utterly untrue.”

“Caring for a family member who faces mental health challenges is incredibly difficult,” the statement added.

“This situation causes immense pain to our entire family.”

In the filing, which has been seen by the BBC, Ms Altman alleged that the abuse, which took place over many years, included rape.

The lawsuit added the last instance of the alleged abuse took place when Mr Altman was an adult but she was still a minor.

The lawsuit requested a jury trial and damages in excess of $75,000 (£60,100).

Ms Altman has previously made similar allegations against her brother on social media platforms such as X.

Mr Altman is one of the technology world’s most high-profile figures.

In late 2022, OpenAI launched the ChatGPT generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot.

ChatGPT maker OpenAI said on Monday it would release a new AI model called GPT-4o, capable of realistic voice conversation and able to interact across text and image, its latest move to stay ahead in a race to dominate the emerging technology.

New audio capabilities enable users to speak to ChatGPT and obtain real-time responses with no delay, as well as interrupt ChatGPT while it is speaking, both hallmarks of realistic conversations that AI voice assistants have found challenging, the OpenAI researchers showed at a livestream event.

“It feels like AI from the movies … Talking to a computer has never felt really natural for me; now it does,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote in a blog post.

Microsoft-backed (MSFT.O) OpenAI faces growing competition and pressure to expand the user base of ChatGPT, its popular chatbot product that wowed the world with its ability to produce human-like written content and top-notch software code.

At the livestream event, OpenAI researchers showed off ChatGPT’s new voice assistant capabilities. In one demo, ChatGPT used its vision and voice capabilities to talk a researcher through solving a math equation on a sheet of paper.

In another demo, researchers showed the GPT-4o model’s capability of real-time language translation.

OpenAI’s demonstrations verged on science-fiction, with ChatGPT and its interlocutor at one point engaging in coquettish banter. The OpenAI researcher told the chatbot he was in a great mood because he was demonstrating “how useful and amazing you are.”

ChatGPT responded: “Oh stop it! You’re making me blush!”

Altman posted on X after the demo, “her,” in what appeared to be a reference to the so named 2013 film by Spike Jonze about a man falling in love with his AI assistant, voiced by Scarlett Johansson.

OpenAI’s chief technology officer, Mira Murati, said at the event that the new model would be offered for free because it is more cost-effective than the company’s previous models. Paid users of GPT-4o will have greater capacity limits than the company’s free users, she said. The GPT-4o model will be available in ChatGPT over the next few weeks, the company said.

In addition, free ChatGPT users now have access to a “browse” feature that enables ChatGPT to display up-to-date information from the web, Murati told Reuters after the event. The company does not intend to make money off free users through selling ads, Murati said.

Shortly after launching in late 2022, ChatGPT was called the fastest application ever to reach 100 million monthly active users. However, worldwide traffic to ChatGPT’s website has been on a roller-coaster ride in the past year and is only now returning to its May 2023 peak, according to analytics firm Similarweb, opens new tab.

OpenAI made the announcements a day before Alphabet (GOOGL.O) is scheduled to hold its annual Google developers’ conference, where it is expected to show off its own new AI-related features. Reuters reported last week that OpenAI planned to announce an AI-powered search product, citing sources. But the company decided to delay the search product announcement, according to one source familiar with the matter.

Shares of Alphabet were down 0.4% on Monday afternoon, after falling nearly 3% earlier in the day. Microsoft shares were down 0.2%.

Over 8,000 published authors, including renowned names like Margaret Atwood and Dan Brown, have signed an open letter demanding compensation from tech companies for using their copyrighted works to train artificial intelligence (AI) tools.

The Authors Guild posted the letter on Tuesday, targeting companies like OpenAI, Meta, Google, Stability AI, IBM, and Microsoft.

The letter accused AI companies of benefiting unfairly from the creative efforts of authors without offering compensation.

“Millions of copyrighted books, articles, essays, and poetry provide the ‘food’ for AI systems, endless meals for which there has been no bill. You’re spending billions of dollars to develop AI technology. It is only fair that you compensate us for using our writings, without which AI would be banal and extremely limited,” the letter reads.

Tech companies are actively working on AI tools that can generate images and written content based on user prompts, utilizing large language models trained on vast amounts of online information.

However, the recent surge in AI Training and Copyright critiques has led to growing pressure on tech giants over alleged violations related to AI training processes.

Earlier this month, comedian Sarah Silverman and two authors filed a copyright lawsuit against OpenAI and Meta, while Google faced a proposed class-action suit accusing the company of “stealing everything ever created and shared on the internet by hundreds of millions of Americans,” including copyrighted content.

Google has denied the claims, asserting its upfront disclosure of using public data for algorithm training.

The authors who signed the letter are demanding compensation “for the past and ongoing use of our works in your generative AI programs.”

They also urged AI companies to seek permission before using copyrighted material and to pay writers when their works feature in AI-generated outputs, regardless of whether they potentially infringe on current copyright law.

Referencing this year’s Supreme Court ruling in Warhol v Goldsmith, where Andy Warhol was found to have infringed on a photographer’s copyright, the letter argued that the high commerciality of AI use countered the fair use defense.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the need to address concerns from creators about AI systems using their works, stating, “We’re trying to work on new models where if an AI system is using your content, or if it’s using your style, you get paid for that.”

The demand from thousands of authors adds to the ongoing debate about intellectual property rights in the context of AI development, further challenging tech companies to find solutions that balance innovation and fair compensation for content creators.
